Ouch! A $2,000 jump in cost with no conversions is a painful reminder that social networking sites are converting less than so-so. They suck. I am fully aware that certain t-shirt retailers and sparkly doodads are most likely making a killing. If you are in the ringtones business or music industry, you have hit the gold mine. BUT, if your business is not targeting these audiences (for our purposes the 10 - 20 somethings) you may be left penny-less and in the dark.

It’s important for in-house SEM’s to know about the risks and rewards of advertising on social networking sites. Why? Because if you are opted into a Content Network, the social networking sites have just become your friend. And they are expensive to keep around! You may be in front of 30 million faces, but are they the right faces? If you’re concerned that you may automatically be in front of teenagers and you are selling dentures, then your concern is real. Here’s a hint…site exclusion is available. Use it!
